Gathering Mercury - Daily Telegraph Review

Colin Hay, once of Men At Work, has a track record of some fine solo work. His song I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You was used to great effect in the film Garden State. Hay also received a memorable name check recently when comedian Johnny Vegas selected the 57-year-old Scottish-Australian singer's superb Waiting For My Real Life To Begin as one of his Desert Island Disc choices.
So I was intrigued to see hear his new solo album, Gathering Mercury. The opening song Send Somebody rattles along nicely but Dear Fatheris an altogether more sombre piece although it is perhaps the heartbeat of the album. The song - in memory of his father obviously - makes the most of some subtle cello and viola playing from Oliver Krause.
The title track Gathering Mercury has Hay's familiar acoustic guitar style with a dash of electric slide. Hay steps up the pace on Where The Sky Is Blue, a real highlight of the album. Throughout the CD his full range of playing is on show - acoustic, electric guitar, mandola, woodskin, banjo, lap steel guitar, harmonium, gryphon 12-string guitar - including one pleasant instrumental called Goodnight Romeo.
